• Why Acidic Foods Are Bad For Your Health

It is stated a medical fact that all diseases thrive in environments characterized by high levels of acidity. If we want to lead a healthy life, it is imperative for us limit our intake of acidic foods. I ignoring this comes at a high price

Foods rich in acid may cause diseases like obesity, osteoporosis, flu, skin disorders, and even cancer. High acidity also results in cramps, spasms, headaches, joint and muscle pains, and fatigue. Eating too much acidic food and not enough alkaline food can also result to insomnia, stomach ulcers, water retention, and constipation.

Also, besides weakening the immune system, indulging in acidic foods can bring forth a decrease in strength and stamina, slow mental reaction, and ineffective digestion.

Acid foods per se can post a threat to our health, but the ubiquity of these foods even furthers the damage. You see, these foods are almost always splattered in peoples daily menus: from breakfast staples like white rice, eggs, cheese, milk, coffee to main courses like pasta, beef, pork, chicken, turkey, to light meals composed of chocolates and peanuts, beer and soft drinksand the list stretches longer than canteen tables! Foods that are rich in phosphorus, sulphur, and chlorine are not spared from the list since these elements are acid-forming.

So how do we steer clear of acidic foods? While it may seem impossible to escape these usual hunger-solvers, there is still a way to counteract their harmful effects on our health. The so-called alkaline diet, which is designed to neutralize the outcomes of acidic food ingestion through consumption of alkaline-based foods such as fruits, vegetables, and other low-sugar foods, is a viable option. An alkaline diet can help restore the balance between acidity and alkalinity. According to Robert Young, who is a prime promoter of alkaline diet and alternative medicine, it is ideal for the body to have a diet that constitutes an intake of 70-80% alkaline foods and 20-30% acid foods.

So what it all boils down to is moderation. Acidic foods are not all bad for our health. In fact, they are an integral part of the balance Young is pointing out. It is even said that a little amount of acidthe right typecan help lower our blood glucose levels. Acetic acid, which is the chief acid in vinegar, can significantly reduce the glycemic index of a starchy meal.

Tap your toes and dance to the festive beats of a Bollywood soundtrack. When youre tired, whet your appetite with an assortment of scrumptious dishes from the various parts of India. Theres something here for everyone. But before you bite into that piping hot wada or chilled gulab jamun, here are some fun facts that will help you see food from India in a different light altogether.
Traditional Indian food has only ONE main course. Instead of a number of courses, food is based around a single main dish (rice or bread) served with a collection of savory side dishes.

The Paneer, or cottage cheese, is a famous Indian delicacy. Cooked with gravy, fried, or added as a garnish over pilafs, paneer is the heartthrob of many yummy North Indian dishes.

Traditionally, rice is cooked in water and the excess water with the excess starch is drained away. This is a healthy way of cooking rice. However, when it comes to the aromatic and delicious Basmati, the quantity of rice is balanced with the water used for cooking so that there is no water left to strain away once the rice is cooked. This preserves the rich flavor and taste of Basmati.

Indians use a variety of milk products in their diet. Fresh, creamy yoghurt is added to vegetable curries. It is also used to make the Lassi, which is nothing more than a milk, er, yoghurt shake!

All Indian cooking is carried out in a variety of vegetable oils like sunflower oil, mustard oil, groundnut oil and coconut oil. Animal fat is never used in cooking.

Almost all recipes from India are rich in nutrients. Ranging from the heavily spiced curries to the rich desserts and halwas, these recipes make use of local vegetables and fruits.

Indians use gur or jaggery instead of sugar. Known as medicinal sugar, this contains minerals, vitamins and iron. Thus, it is one of the most wholesome and healthy forms of sugar known to man.

Ever wonder why the Indian curry is so spicy? Well, its stuffed with a lot of stuff like turmeric, chilly, garlic, ginger and mint which is good for you.

The flatbreads from India (chapattis and Naans) can be made without oil or yeast. When they are made from whole grains, these items are rich in vitamins and fibers.

Indian food is tailor-made to suit the requirements of the body. If cooked properly, it is both healthy and delicious a rare combination indeed!

  • Benefits of Working in the Fast Food Industry

    November 9, 2020 /  Food and Culinary

Yes, I have worked in the fast food industry when I was way younger and let’s just say that… it’s the next best thing to slavery. No, I am kidding but there are many things that you can really learn when you work in the fast food industry and they all help you discover things about people, business, life and even yourself. I think everyone should work behind a fast food counter at least once in their life.

So, this is what being paid peanuts feel like

Oh… this is what it is like working from ground up. I don’t think it is a fact that is so glaringly apparent only in this country because generally speaking, fast food restaurants are known to hire part-timers or students or school leavers, hence, the low pay but frankly, it is a priceless (pardon the pun) experience because you will then know what it feels like to stand there the entire day and earn hardly enough pocket money for two meals.

I am totally sending my kids to work at a fast food restaurant.

    Teamwork

Working in a fast food restaurant teaches you about teamwork, teamwork, teamwork, TEAMWORK. If someone in the back kitchen doesn’t defrost the chicken quick enough or someone stupidly forgets to heat up the gravy, everyone suffers. In essence, you come to work and you will feel the responsibility of reminding your co-workers about things that they might forget. If one person is too busy, the others may have to chip in.

Working in such an environment will help you learn about being responsible as a whole, not just as a person. One person fouls up, everyone gets it. This experience will help you learn to work in just about ANY environment in the future, be it a large IT firm or when you are running your own clothing retail outlet.

    Managing people

Nothing teaches this better than being behind the counter… be it the cashier’s counter or the complaints counter. Managers need to learn how to motivate and organize tasks and people based on their capabilities and commitment while cashiers need to smile and be pleasant during their worst moments… like after their boyfriends just dumped them. Got dumped? There are customers to be served, serve them.

And of course, it doesn’t help during those moments that an irate and irrational customer walks up to the counter and you know they are dead wrong and yet they insist on being right and society demands that they are.

    The speed of light

When it comes to fast food, people are impatient and you need to keep up to speed… like only ALL THE TIME. Need I say more?

So, yeah… working in the fast food industry sure has benefits.

  • The Benefits Of Plastic Food Packaging

Comments Off on The Benefits Of Plastic Food Packaging
    October 30, 2020 /  Food and Culinary

From condiments to fresh meats, frozen vegetables to dried pasta, plastic food packaging comes in many different forms and serves various purposes. The benefits of plastic food packaging go beyond a simple container used to ship and store products. With today’s advanced technology and the growing need for more eco-friendly and sustainable solutions, plastic food packaging has come a long way. Not only does plastic allow food to be stored in numerous locations and climates, but it also helps to keep consumers safe, preserve food quality and even reduce waste.

    Safety:
With foods being imported from various parts of the globe to your neighborhood grocery store, there is a growing concern over how fresh the foods remain upon arriving on the store shelves. By packaging foods in plastic, the products keep food fresh through travel and storage. Fresh produce, beverages and even dairy products can remain fresh in plastic packaging even when transported long distances, ensuring consumers are safe from bacteria and foodborne illness.

    Food Quality:
Besides keeping food safe from bacteria and spoilage, plastic packaging helps to preserve food quality, as well. Freezer bags, for example, protect foods against freezer burn and ice crystals. Plastic packaging also works as a barrier against negative effects on food quality caused by exposure to moisture or oxygen. By keeping food protected and sealed in plastic packaging, flavors, textures and other quality components remain preserved.

    Shelf Life:
Today’s consumers are often concerned with many foods’ shelf lives, as foods that stay fresher for longer periods of time are more convenient options that can also help reduce food costs. New technology in plastic packaging, such as multilayer package applications, help prolong the shelf life of foods such as beer, ketchup and milk. Many foods, including cooked poultry and baked goods, require a controlled carbon dioxide to oxygen ratio that maintains freshness. Modified atmospheric packages keep such ratios at optimum levels to extend shelf life.

    Reduced Waste:
The combination of increased safety, food quality and shelf life that is made possible through plastic food packaging contributes to a decrease in overall food waste. Keeping food fresher for longer reduces the amount of food that is thrown out simply because it sit on the shelves for too long. Higher quality in food also reduces waste, as plastic packaging preserves foods’ quality and eliminates the need to throw out food due to flavor loss or change in texture.

As plastic technology continues to advance, our food will continue to improve while keeping consumer happy and healthy.

  • What You Need To Know About Food Acidity

Comments Off on What You Need To Know About Food Acidity
    October 25, 2020 /  Food and Culinary

Our nutrition is the most importact influence on our body’s acidity, and therefore it is essential to understand food acidity when we aim to live by a healthy acid alkaline balance. As we all know, famoous celebrities, such as Tony and Sage Robbins, Kirsten Dunst and Robert Young swear by an alkaline diet.

If you’re interested in leading an alkaline lifestyle, you want to keep your body mainly in the alkaline zone. A quick review: Chemically, the pH Level is measured on a pH scale ranging from 0-14, with 7 being neutral, less than 7 acidic and more than 7 alkaline. .

Research and experience have shown that our bodies function more efficiently when in an alkaline state. The metabolism is improved, cells live longer, our internal organs work more effectively, we feel more energised and most people also lose weight.

How Our Bodies Neutralise Acidic Foods

When we consume acidic foods, the body will try and neutralize the acids, so that it can return to its most efficient state (the alkaline state). This neutralising of acids is also often described as “detoxing”. Generally the body can neutralise acids through our organs (such as liver and kidneys) or through deep breathing. Any acids that cannot be neutralised are stored in the tissues of the body. During a detox, you would reduce the amount of acids you put into your body, therefore the body has the capacity to neutralise the acids that have been stored in the body tissue. This can be a difficult process, as many people get withdrawal symptoms (from sugar, alcohol, nicotine, etc) and at the same time experience the toxins that are being neutralised in the body (these may be expressed through head aches, mood swings, etc).

    Food Acidity And Acidic Foods

Firstly we need to differentiate between foods that are acidic, and foods that have an acidic effect on our bodies. These are two different aspects, as some foods themselves are considered acidic, but when consumed they have an alkalising effect on the body. For example, lemons and limes are acidic, but when consumed, they help to alkalise the body.

    Measuring Food Acidity

The degree of food acidity is measured by determining its pH value or analyzing its mineral content. The lower a pH value is the more acidic is the food. Acidic minerals include sulfur, chlorine, phosphorus, flouride, iodine and silicon. When a food contains more acidic than alkaline minerals it is said to be acidic. If you want to know the acidity or alkalinity of a certain food, the easiest way is to get an alkaline foods chart to guide your way.

This is a basic summary on food acidity. If you are interested in improving your body’s alkalinity or following an , there are some easy and fast ways to include more alkaline foods in your diet. Find out more at

  • The Foods You Eat Can Change Your Skin Colour

    October 24, 2020 /  Food and Culinary

In case you haven’t heard, you are what you eat. Perhaps you won’t turn into a chocolate chip cookie, but there are certain foods that can increase or decrease your melanin production.

Melanin activates the pigmentation of your skin, making in darker when more melanin is being produced by the body. So, depending on the look you are hoping to achieve, eating certain foods can increase the melanin, while avoiding these foods will stagnate it.

Light coloured foods will give you whiter skin. Foods such as eggs and milk will dilute the melanin and keep your skin lighter coloured. On the other hand, the same theory applies to dark coloured foods. Deep, dark foods like coffee, tea, and black sesame can make your skin appear darker.

Vegetables and fruits contain many minerals and nutrients such as zinc, iron and copper. Lemons and cucumbers are excellent examples of foods rich in these minerals which aid in the formation of melanin. Strawberries, on the other hand can reduce melanin, keeping your skin lighter.

One element that is related to common minerals such as iron, copper and zinc, is tyrosinase. Research has shown that ingesting foods rich in tyrosinase has a proven ability to deepen and darken the colour of a person’s skin. The foods which contain this element include the liver from animals, such as beef liver. You can also find this nutrient in walnut seeds, black sesames or even certain beans.

While eating certain foods may impact the natural tone and colour of your skin, it’s important to remember to keep balance in your diet. Eating too much of any specific food could cause digestion problems, not to mention deprive your body of the balanced nutrition it needs. If you’re hoping to gradually change your appearance, you’re better off to add a few pigment enhancing foods to your daily diet.

  • How To Keep Your Food Warm With A Food Warmer

Comments Off on How To Keep Your Food Warm With A Food Warmer
    October 16, 2020 /  Food and Culinary

When you work in catering you know the importance of keeping the food youve worked hard to prepare warm. However, if youve ever gone shopping for a food warmer you may have become overwhelmed by the sheer amount of machines there are on the market for keeping your food hot. If youve ever felt clueless about food warmers, what they do, and which ones will work best for you below is a list to get you started in the crowded world of food warmers.

Full Sized Warmers are the large food warmers that you often find at large events or hotel banquets. They hold large pans of food in place while hot water is placed in the bottom pan to keep the food hot and moist. Some full size warmers are quite big and designed to hold more than one full-sized pan of food. Other units are smaller. When you purchase a full sized warmer keep in mind that the warmer itself only holds hot water; you will need to buy the pans to hold the food separately.

If you plan to offer a lot of food, such as at a buffet, then you might want to invest in heated shelves which can keep food warm for long periods of time. Heated shelves are different from full size warmers since you dont have to worry about filling trays of hot water. They come in different sizes, and they are offered with different wattage points; bigger shelves need more wattage.

Another warmer type that utilizes water to heat foods is a round countertop food warmer. These types of food warmers are used for soups, gravies, and other liquid-based foods. You simply place hot water into the round countertop warmer and place a separate insert holding the food inside. Once your warmer is setup you can place a lid over the warmer to keep the warmth from escaping as fast. Lids can be hinged or unhinged. These inserts sometimes need to be bought separately so always double-check before you buy this type of warmer whether you will need to supply your own insert.

Like round countertop food warmers, soup food warmers keep liquid-based foods like soups and stews warm. Some soup food warmers are electric allowing the operator to adjust the temperature accordingly. These warmers also usually come with an insert to place the food into before placing into the warmer.

Strip Heaters are similar to trays, but they are primarily used to keep food warm until it is served out. They are not commonly used at buffets or anywhere where a customer would come into contact with it, and instead are a stopping off point between the kitchen and the table. Some strip heaters are hotter than others so you will want to research each before purchasing as the hotter a heater is the more chances there are that the food placed on top will dry out.
